WVDM Living Lab
The WVDM Living Lab bridges the theory and practice of circular construction. Twelve modules of the former student units on the VUB campus, designed in 1972 by modernist architect Willy Van Der Meeren, were renovated using circular renovation strategies. The project starts from a resilient structure that meets the basic requirements of each programme. The qualities of the 'as found' — such as thermal inertia and modularity — are maximised and complemented by an envelope of biobased materials. Reversible layers can be added according to need. The modular structure allows for the use of building kits with standardised and interchangeable components, assembled like a meccano set. This creates a materials bank that is generic and scalable in concept, but can be specific according to functional and comfort requirements.
