Guided tour / urban-sourcing / The curator's selection

La Mémé

**Construction team:** Kroll Atelier
**Implementation:** 1972 This iconic student housing complex was built in the aftermath of May '68. For many, La Mémé marked a radical break with the modern architectural tradition, as the architect moved from being a figure of authority to a mediator in a process geared towards participation. This enabled a close bond to be forged between the building and its future users. The watchwords for the design were flexibility and adaptability. The structure could evolve over time, incorporating changes based on simple, prefabricated materials. This distinction between long-term structure and short-term function is now a core principle and a ubiquitous part of the discourse around sustainable architecture.
