Located on the plot of land between rue Veydt and rue Faider, this building was completed in 1877 to the designs of architect Gérard Maréchal, who designed and built many houses and townhouses for the middle classes in the Saint-Gilles district. It was originally a complex of industrial buildings containing a huge hall dedicated to roller-skating, a very popular and fashionable sport in nineteenth-century Brussels and all over Europe. The roller-skating rink closed in 1900, and the building was subsequently used for a variety of activities. In 1905, a hanger was added on the rue Faider side. In 2007, Valérie Bach, a French art gallery owner, and Philippe Austry purchased this remarkable complex and converted it into a huge contemporary art centre, as big as many museums. The conversion and restoration project was managed by the architect Jean-Paul Hermant, while the interiors and exhibition spaces were created by interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch.
