Victoria tower
Team: 51N4E
Also known to Brussels residents as the IBM or Police Tower, after its two most recent proprietors, this iconic building adjoining the Botanical Garden is currently being renovated and repurposed. Once occupied entirely by offices, it will soon be home to a hotel, co-working spaces, offices and hospitality venues. The tower will be largely preserved, with the concrete shell and circulation shafts being reused. The façade is new, but looks exactly the same as its predecessor design from 1974. The architects from 51N4E took a conservative, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' approach here.
All too often nowadays, large buildings are completely demolished, with all the waste and logistics this entails, when they are actually still in decent condition. The Victoria Tower is an example of how empty office buildings can be given a new lease of life, with hybrid uses and new connections to the city.
