Pierre Paulus Park + Place Marie Janson/Marie Jansonplein
Pierre Paulus Park
Architect : Ledroit-Pierret-Polet+Piegon Ochej
Client : Commune de Saint-Gilles
Parc Pierre Paulus, located in Saint-Gilles, has undergone a complete renovation as part of a neighborhood contract, aimed at preserving its historic character while making it more accessible. Also referred to by its users as “Park of the Ducks”, it is an important park for residents in this densely populated part of Saint-Gilles, which has fewer green spaces. This inner-block park is distinguished by its English-style landscaping features, including rockeries and “fabriques”, waterfalls and a pond.
The work was carried out jointly by the Ledroit Pierret Polet architectural firm and the Pigeon Ochej landscaping firm. The proposed project involved renovating the park, restoring historic elements and adding new trees, while carefully preserving its original character. The playground has been redeveloped, with the addition of new petanque courts and public toilets. Meanwhile, the boulodrome has been completely renovated and opens onto the park through large bay windows, housing a cafeteria and terrace.
Accessibility for people with reduced mobility has been improved, making it even more attractive to the general public. It has also become a must-see area for families, thanks in particular to its large slide, which is the longest in Saint-Gilles.
With its new dynamism, the Parc Pierre Paulus is set to become one of Saint-Gilles' main active areas, and is also close to Place Marie-Janson and the Parvis. This project enhances both the natural and historical heritage of the area while meeting the needs of today's residents.

The new Place Marie Janson is located in the active heart of Saint-Gilles, between the parvis and rue de la Victoire, which leads down to Porte de Namur. This new project connects the square and the parvis, creating a seamless continuity and a pleasant strolling path. This less densely populated area provides a breathing space within the neighbourhood.
Market activities and occasional festivities have been thoughtfully planned, for example with the addition of available toilets during these events. Numerous facilities, such as children's playgrounds and outdoor fitness areas, punctuate and activate the space. The proximity of the Parc Pierre Paulus and public transport will enable this part of the city to establish itself as an activity zone for local residents.
The design of the square takes into account existing elements, such as the remnants of the mint building, enhancing them with several canopies made of green-painted metal structure. These visually important canopies mark the corners of the square and act as soft thresholds.
Water management was another important consideration. On the ground, the grid of paved pathways is increasingly spread out towards the vegetated areas, gradually allowing more water to infiltrate into the soil.
Existing trees have been preserved and sixty new ones have been added. This new tree cover will keep the square cool in summer and prevent heat islands.
All these considerations reflect the emergence of a contemporary approach to urban planning and the importance of public parks.
These two projects were carried out as part of the ‘Parvis-Morichar’ sustainable neighbourhood contract (2015 - 2019).
