In 2023, a new training centre was opened in a former warehouse and residential building on Rue Masui. The building, owned by the municipality, has been fully renovated according to a design by Vanden Eeckhoudt-Creyf architectes. It now meets environmental standards and houses three classrooms, a large workshop, storage areas, administrative offices, a cafeteria, and locker rooms. Around thirty trainees, both men and women, receive training in gardening, paving, and building painting, supervised by staff. The building is managed by the associations JST (Jeunes Schaerbeekois au Travail) and SAE (Schaerbeek Action Emploi), both of which organise training projects for low-skilled job seekers.
The large hangar is located in the Northern Quarter and borders the Parc de la Senne/Zennepark at the rear. The garden, which opens onto the park, is a key element in the design, complementing the function of the training centre. The industrial hall provides space for new volumes whose roofs reference the original structure. The openings in the roofs of these new volumes bring light into the various training areas. As much of the existing structure has been preserved as possible, and the architecture serves the building's function. The theme of craftsmanship aligns with the dialogue between past and present.
The realization of this project was made possible with support from the Brussels-Capital Region (via funds from the Sustainable District Contract Reine-Progrès (2012-2016)). The project also received support from Brussels Economy and Employment, Actiris, the CPAS of Schaerbeek, Brussels Formation, the Cocof, and the European Social Fund.
