Come and visit FLOW CHAUD, the sauna that the UCLouvain-LOCI-IMA students built this spring at FLOW!
It all started last January, in the heart of the forests of the eastern cantons of Belgium, where IMA students in architecture learned about the cycle of a sustainable forest. Students cut and collected dry wood in strict quantities necessary to build a sauna this June at Flow, Brussels. In the context of its construction course, LOCI-IMA teaches ways of sustainable design and construction. After working with hemp blocks in 2023, LOCI-IMA looked into building with small sections of wood, thanks to numerus collaborations with teachers from 2 universities, 2 professional architects, 2 non-profit associations. After 4 months of analyzing existing sauna references, exchanging ideas about possible structures, describing and calculating quantities, all participants of this adventure were proud to be part of the construction at FLOW, the swimming pool at the canal in Anderlecht run by POOL IS COOL.
This project counted around twenty students and was supervised by teachers from UCLouvain-LOCI and AHO, N.I. Non-Traditional Maker practice, Oslo Sauna Association and POOL IS COOL.
The wooden construction was thought out, discussed, designed by all the stakeholders together. Designed over a four-month period and built in five days, the sauna can accommodate today around ten people in the heart of Brussels. The most important accomplishment in this adventure lies in the bond that has been forged between the participants in the project!
