Fabiola

Architect : Carton 123
Client : Municipality of Anderlecht

The Fabiola Pavilion designed by Carton 123 is located in Astrid Park. This pavilion is full of creativity and reflects the designers' attention to detail.. The truncated shape and unusual roof make it immediately recognisable in the park's landscape. The distinctive appearance highlights its purpose as a café and a space dedicated to local life. To accommodate this local life and the activities that take place there, the interior has been specifically designed to function either as a large hall or be divided into several rooms.

This sense of welcoming and generosity toward all the park visitors is also reflected in the roof design. Expansive, it extends generously to shelter the areas around the pavilion, making them accessible even when the pavilion is closed. Its size is not its only unique feature. The architects, mindful of preserving the surrounding trees and keeping them intact, designed the roof to be easily maintained despite falling leaves. Instead of opting for traditional gutters, they added ridges to the roof to guide water without the risk of clogging. The water, and its flow, continues to be highlighted through an element that extends from the roof, allowing water to fall onto rocks, where it can then seep into the ground.

This attention to the pavilion's care and ongoing maintenance is also evident in the choice of materials for the exterior façade. The prefabricated elements near the ground were selected for their smooth and durable finish, giving them both a luxurious character and ensuring the pavilion’s resilience against potential damage. The above-ground elements on the other hand, were chosen with a more conventional finish for cost efficiency.

Certain elements with more expressive materials and colors stand out from the otherwise neutral building, catching the eye: the yellow beam, the interior furniture, and the green varnished wooden window frames.

After discovering the playful aesthetic of the pavilion, one also notices the architectural gestures that reflect great care for the users and a subtle mastery of the building process.
