Guided tour / The curator's selection / Second Life of Materials / Dialogue between Past and Present
Étangs Noirs
Architects: hylé
Client: Private
The project involves the rehabilitation of a former carpentry workshop located in the heart of a block in Molenbeek, transformed into a combined living space, workshop, and office. The approach of hylé focuses on ecological principles and respect for the existing structure, blurring the line between old and new by using simple materials and breathing new life into reclaimed elements.
Beyond the change in function, the key objectives are to reveal the intrinsic qualities of the site, integrate it with the surrounding neighbourhood, and adopt a truly circular approach. Nothing is wasted here as hylé challenges the traditional phase of demolition by systematically favoring the reuse of materials.
Originally lacking outdoor spaces, the fully developed plot now features a central outdoor area. This pivotal intervention combines durability, material reuse, and enhances the site’s characteristics. These new spaces, which feature generous heights, bring in natural light, ventilation, and summer coolness thanks to the plants and the integration of a water basin. Rainwater is reused to supply water to the building.
The reuse of materials such as cast iron radiators and bricks is central to the project. Meanwhile, new technical installations are designed to be accessible and modular, making future maintenance and replacements easier without the need for demolition. The spaces are designed to adapt to the evolving needs of the occupants, ensuring flexibility and long-term usability.
