Guided tour / The curator's selection / The revival of craftsmanship
Espace Aygo
Creators: Espace Aygo: Salomé Sperling, Jaime le Bleu, Ale Mangindaan, Line Murken, Sijmen Vellekoop
This project involves the transformation of a derelict 19th-century townhouse in Brussels into a creative living and working space by a group of young artists and designers. The collective, known as Espace Aygo, has turned the property into a dynamic, DIY home, studio, and artistic experiment. They renovated the space using salvaged materials and handmade furniture, showcasing a patchwork style that merges contemporary design with artisanal craftsmanship.
The renovation process, deeply rooted in resourcefulness, was a creative journey in itself. Each room in the house became a canvas for their art, blending old elements like stained-glass windows with custom-built features like metal staircases and papier-mâché walls. The group also hosts cultural events and experiments with new artistic techniques, all while living in the space they are creating. Despite setbacks, the artists continue to adapt and innovate, seeing each challenge as an opportunity to strengthen their bond and refine their craft.
As their lease comes to an end, the artists plan to sell their creations and start anew elsewhere, applying the skills and experiences they’ve gained. The project stands as a testament to the revival of craftsmanship through artistic collaboration, DIY gesamtkunstwerk, and the merging of art and everyday life. Espace Aygo showcases that architecture can emerge from other specialists within the design space.
