Centr’Al

A closed competition brief by the Brussels suburb of Forest sought new neighbourhood meeting spaces to promote social cohesion and the redevelopment of Albertpool, an urban site that, after the reconstruction of the premetro station, was no more than an indistinct real estate relic in a pitiful state. In response, two compact new buildings, named Centr’Al, were designed. Both hosting sporting and cultural neighbourhood facilities, they form a new and uplifting gateway to this city quarter.

Visitors enter beneath covered outdoor spaces, to reach the auditorium and sports halls, or the neighbourhood restaurant overlooking the new town square. The foyer extends over the buildings’ various floors, becoming a meeting place for all users of the complex, while the roof terrace can be used for soft sports and activities. Thanks to the transparent and translucent façades, the lively functions of the buildings are revealed and represented. Alongside the redevelopment of the Albertpool public space, Centr’Al became an opportunity to put this densely populated and vibrant neighbourhood on the capital’s map.
