I. Life

Life, or spaces of domestic life and supporting structure: CBR Building – Fosbury & Sons, Brutopia, P.NT2, La Serre – visit-exchanges with the participants.

There was a time, early in the 20th century, when architects and planners argued in favour of the separation of functions. This has led to cities being divided into monofunctional neighbourhoods and structured by transport infrastructure. CBR Building is a typical office building of this era, however its recent conversion into a space characterised by a blend between working spaces with a strong influence of the domestic sphere, testifies to the shift in favour of overlaid and hybrid uses of spaces. The conversion of previously monofunctional buildings is a major vector of hybridization which also brings to life poetic mismatches between space and programme, such as the industrial building P.NT2 transformed into creative offices, commercial spaces and private households. La Serre, a community project which occupies a covered parking lot, is a space dedicated to creativity and collective societal innovation. It showcases adaptability and bottom-up appropriation of derelict spaces, whereas Brutopia, the only newly-constructed project of this category, is a collective housing project initiated by the homeowners themselves. It allows for both individual adaptability and strong collectivity.
