Call for projects for the 2021 archiweek curator

This call for applications invites architects, urban planners, designers, researchers, critics or artists to apply to be the curator of archiweek 2021.

urban.brussels is an administration of the Brussels-Capital Region. Its main purpose is to support regional territorial development in terms of urban planning, cultural heritage and urban regeneration. urban.brussels also plays a central role in raising public awareness of the fact that today, we are working together to build the city of tomorrow.

archiweek, organised annually in the Brussels-Capital Region by urban.brussels, aims to raise awareness and introduce the public to quality contemporary architecture.

During this special week, which will take place from 9 to 19 October 2021, guided tours, open days at architectural offices, symposia, workshops, conferences and an exhibition will be provided free of charge to all.

This year, the highlight of archiweek, the multilingual (FR, NL, EN) tours of some 20 contemporary creations, will take place over the weekend of 9 and 10 October.

The appointed curator will be responsible for choosing and presenting this selection of contemporary creations which are considered interesting in terms of their theme, perspective or criteria that the curator has defined. The selection can include any architectural work: buildings (offices, housing, shops, etc.), renovations, interior design, public spaces, landscaped areas, parks and gardens, provided they are less than fifteen years old.

Exceptionally, a creation may be older, provided that it serves as an example or is, in the curator's view, a model to be followed. These creations do not necessarily have to be completed (a site visit is possible), but the progress of the work should allow the public to easily understand/visualise the project. Consequently, projects without concrete realisation will not be accepted.

The curator will also be invited to participate in the programming of initiatives related to their selection of architectural creations in Brussels, organised in the same week, or following archiweek.

An Appointment Committee, including the Director General of urban.brussels (or her representative), the Secretary of State Pascal Smet (or his representative) and representatives of urban.brussels will appoint the curator based on the following criteria:

  • the quality and coherence of the proposal ;
  • the innovative aspect and relevance of the discourse ;
  • the project's ability to communicate with the general public.
