Guided tour / Flexibility

Woonbox

Team: Samenlevingsopbouw Brussel; Martin Vandereyt Group, KU Leuven

Brussels is grappling with a shortage of social housing. At the same time, there is a lot of empty space, especially in office buildings. The WOONBOX ('Living Box') project from Samenlevingsopbouw ('Community Development') addresses this mismatch. This non-profit organisation standing up for vulnerable people in society developed a modular kit, consisting of wired standard panels with windows and doors, that can be assembled inside vacant buildings. It put up the first series of these residential units in the former premises of beverage company Cinoco in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean/Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. In all, 10 such units have been erected in this bright and generous space, providing a home for 34 residents. For three years, these individuals and families will receive social support with a view to employment, education/training and a steady home.

The project is a good example of how, with appropriate creativity and determination, new forms of temporary and affordable housing can be created. This demonstrates that there is an alternative to properties standing empty for extended periods, and a solution to endless waiting lists for social housing. The beneficiaries of this scheme are living proof that a different approach is possible.

The visits on 16.10.2021 and 17.10.2021 at 12:00 will be given by the architect.
