The striking bookshop and café breathe new life into the entrance hall of WIELS, the Brussels center for contemporary art located in Forest. WIELS opened its doors over 15 years ago in the former Wielemans-Ceuppens brewery, a design from 1930 by Adrien Blomme. The building, also known as the Blomme or Wielemans Tower, is one of the last modernist industrial buildings in Belgium. The remnants of the brewery within WIELS have since become national heritage. During the renovation from 2005 to 2008, various elements were restored in an identical manner, providing an authentic experience for visitors. The brewing hall with its brewing tanks, tiling, light fixtures, and the exceptional ribbon windows on the upper floors, are examples of the remarkable and unique character of this modernist building.
The building features three exhibition spaces and a cinema/auditorium. In the entrance hall, you’ll find the book and ticket shop and the café-restaurant. These colourful metal interventions in the entrance hall were designed by Piovene Fabi and executed in 2023 using wrought iron assemblies from Denis Romainville & Eutectic (Pierre Eyben), with a workshop located on the nearby rue Paapsem. These objects are flexible and thus future-proof for the changing layout of WIELS's entrance hall.
The visit on Sunday 13.10.2024 at 11:00 will be given by the architect and the craftman (FR).
