Sparrow Garden

Team: 2DVW, Duotuin, Refresh

The Mussensteeg has long been an informal passage and a meeting place. With the arrival of a new social housing project and the renovation of the neighbouring supermarket, the cosy alley would also change. The architects consciously chose to maintain an informal, green atmosphere, supplemented by a series of 'objects' that allow the space to be appropriated. There is a new staircase that gives access to the roof of the supermarket. An abundant collective garden is flourishing there, with vegetables, fruit and herbs. A short distance away, some of these fruits and vegetables end up on the menu of a restaurant that promotes social reintegration. Besides two supermarket chains in the street, the garden offers a worthy alternative to consume locally or 'with short supply chains'.
The context shows how architecture can enrich an existing context and create space for new traditions, without disrupting the existing ones. By giving shape to different 'spheres of influence', the architects strove to make the different uses possible in parallel: residents coming home, people from the neighbourhood coming to pick vegetables, informal get-togethers or parties, etc.
