Lillas - projet lauréat de RENOLAB

Lillas: Balancing Renovation and Preservation of Historic Character

Lillas is an inspiring example of the renovation of a single-family home located in Sint-Agatha-Berchem. The challenge for both the architects and the client was to modernise the house while preserving its historical character. This project is particularly noteworthy as it is reproducible and reflects the situation of many homes in Brussels.

This comprehensive renovation optimised the home's liveability and energy performance, all while adhering to principles of circularity and sustainability. The project focused on retaining as many elements as possible on-site, with various dismantled components being repurposed for different functions or locations within the property.

The renovation improved the connection between the living room and the garden, situated between the basement and the ground floor. Additionally, the work significantly enhanced the house’s energy efficiency and made internal circulation smoother.

Lillas is a laureate project of RENOLAB. RENOLAB is a laboratory for sustainable and circular renovation projects and is part of Renolution, the strategy for the sustainable renovation of Brussels' buildings launched in 2020. To combat climate change, reduce energy bills, and ensure a healthy living environment for Brussels' residents, it is vital to reduce the region's dependency on fossil fuels by massively insulating buildings and increasing the use of renewable energy. RENOLAB, coordinated by Brussels Environment, is one of the tools to achieve this. It targets all Brussels stakeholders (clients, contractors, and designers) who want to approach renovation differently—making existing buildings more energy-efficient and reducing their impact on resources, health, and the environment.
