Guided tour / The curator's selection / Dialogue between Past and Present
Place Flagey/Flageyplein
Architect : Kollektif Landscape + Fallow + Ecorce
Client : Municipality of Ixelles and Brussels region
The competition for the redevelopment of Place Flagey and Place de la Sainte-Croix was won by a consortium comprising Kollektif Landscape, Fallow, and Ecorce. The aim of the project is to demineralize the square, plant around 100 new trees, and create spaces that encourage encounters between people.
The central area is left untouched, while the surrounding area is planted with different species of trees and low vegetation. This central area will be left free to accommodate the annual markets and fairs that take place at Flagey.
In contrast to the rectilinear pattern of the bluestone paving, the plant beds are designed with curved shapes to create smaller areas, utilizing the original benches that have been preserved. These areas will assist in managing the rainwater infiltration. This vegetation will also help mitigate the effects of summer heat waves.
