Guided tour / Project nominated for the Brussels Architecture Prize
Park Pannenhuis
Landinzicht Landschapsarchitecten, 2021
Created on the former route of railway line L28, the Pannenhuis Park site was until recently an inaccessible post-industrial wasteland that had been left to the mercy of nature for some 30 years. The special atmosphere of this wilderness was the starting point for the park project, the fruit of a participatory process carried out with local residents. The natural aspect of the site, including woods and a marsh, has been preserved and the rest of the park dedicated to sport and play.
The infrastructure that has been put in place builds on the site's railway past, transforming the tracks into a cycle path, reusing the rails as play equipment and redeveloping the water tower that formerly powered the steam trains. Connecting the park with its surroundings was a major challenge, which was met by the creation of three entrances designed as architectural landmarks to guide visitors: a gentle slope, a rock and a dome.
Intended as a natural extension of Tour & Taxis Park, Pannenhuis Park offers a densely wooded counterpoint to the openness of its neighbour. It is a piece of nature returned to the city, offering an alternative route dedicated to soft and active mobility.
