MDW Architecture

In architectural design, there is a need to act, to combine production with reflection. This is, in any case, the idea that drives our practice within MDW Architecture, founded by Marie Moignot and Xavier De Wil in 2001, and later joined by Laurent Liefooghe as artistic director.

Our team, now consisting of around thirty collaborators, organizes into small groups with complementary experiences and abilities. Like in a workshop, we gather around objects, models, and drawings to design by doing; we place great importance on this horizontal and open production approach.

Over the years, through certain key milestones, our approach to architectural design has taken shape. For instance, the project of Savonnerie Heymans, initiated in 2005, already hinted at some of our future concerns. Or the encounter with Jean Nouvel during the project of Charleroi Police Headquarters and the extension of Charleroi Danses in 2011, which allowed the office to broaden its perspectives by addressing a mixed and highly complex program alongside an eminent architect. Of course, there's also the project of the new RTBF headquarters, in the context of the media park transformation, which was very challenging in terms of program, flexibility, and sustainability and resulted in a fruitful collaboration with the V+ office, enriching our mutual practices. Lastly, more recently, the Terre-Neuve sports hall project provided us with an opportunity to engage with the city, not as an institution, but as an urban entity.

While our experience is enriched by many years of practice, our ambition is to continue refining our architectural responses and to pursue this perpetual quest that will enable us to meet the many challenges that the future holds.
