Program 2023

Guided tour / Project nominated for the Brussels Architecture Prize

GRAB Schaerbeek

Geurst & Schulze architecten and JAVA Architects, 2022

A multifunctional complex with a varied programme has been created on the site of a former industrial ensemble dating back to the early 20th century. On the street side, on the left, stands a new Dutch-language primary school and kindergarten, De Kriek, with it’s adjoining caretaker's house. On the right is a new building with a shed roof, housing a sports hall and gymnasium. These buildings, with their well-crafted brick façades, form a link with the existing row of individual houses on the street, while their large windows offer a glimpse of the activities taking place there.

Behind the sports building, the French-language La Vallée primary school has been renovated and enlarged, while an old 1938 electrical transformer factory has been restored behind the Dutch-language school. It is home to Le Chenil, a psychomotricity centre, and to the canteen of De Kriek school, to which it is linked by a covered passageway.

The compact design of the buildings, with their rooftop play areas, has spared as many existing trees as possible. Laid out as a green space, the centre of the complex can be seen from several parts of the street, reinforcing its dialogue with the public space.

The visit on Saturday 18.11.2023 at 10:00 will be given by one of the architects.
