Fernand Blum
Architects: A Practice
Client: Municipality of Schaarbeek
The Fernand Blum Atheneum was built in the 1930s, designed by architect Adolphe Paillet. The secondary school is characterised by its Art Deco style and needed an expansion of its programme. The space was found on the roof, where a lightweight structure of CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) respectfully builds upon what already exists. To further limit the weight, the volume is wrapped in perforated metal, creating a play of transparency and shade. The new floor, which is directly connected to the existing staircase, organises twelve new classrooms on either side of a promenade, interrupted by two patios.
The roof extension of this secondary school crowns the southern wing of a building whose typology is characteristic of the Brussels school landscape. The municipal complex has the shape of a square with a double central playground. The western part was originally reserved for the primary school, while the eastern part was designated for secondary education. On Avenue Ernest Renan a recessed central access volume is flanked by two large wings, each with a covered playground at the back, accessible via an entrance from the avenue. The classrooms are located in the western and eastern wings. To the north, there are three volumes that line the avenue, also containing classrooms, and include the gymnasiums. The existing façades feature orange brick with elements of hard stone and faux stone.
