Brussels Beer Project Brewery

Office KGDVS, Boydens Engineering, UTIL Struktuurstudies (stability), Jeroen Provoost (landscape architect), 2022

The Brussels Beer Project (BBP) is a participatory project driven by an enthusiastic community that has set itself the challenge of developing a bold, creative brewery of the 21st century, with a production capacity of 10 million bottles a year. Located on the bank of the canal, in a fast-developing industrial zone known as Port Sud, the complex takes the form of a “magic box”, a compact industrial container with a sloping roof featuring the brightly coloured stripes that characterise BBP's graphic identity. A strong presence that functions like a beacon in the urban landscape.

Inside, the brewing machines and tanks are spread out over a series of platforms linked by staircases. They are visible from outside through a vast window. The tasting room opens onto the brewing room and can be opened out to form a terrace. In summer, it extends outside into a beer garden with a bar for a variety of events. The project focuses on flexibility, with an open plan that can be modified in the future, and on sustainability, with a system for recovering heat generated by the brewing process and a system for reusing rainwater collected from the roof surface.
