Brussels and Schaerbeek cemeteries – visit-exchange with the participants

These three cemeteries, located in the north-east of Brussels, each testify to our evolving relationship to death and the rituals of departure. The 38-hectare Brussels Cemetery, inaugurated in 1877 as Brussel’s unique cemetery, was designed as a landscape park and hosts many commemorative monuments. Schaerbeek Cemetery, opened in 1952, is on the contrary indebted to the modernist zoning approach. It includes the multiconfessional cemetery of Evere, which encourages public participation for its maintenance. Knowing that the Brussels Region has no recent crematorium, this debate-visit will focus on the requirements for contemporary spaces to accompany present-day mourning.

*Note: the tour will visit Brussels Cemetery, however participants are invited to visit Schaerbeek Cemetery on their own.

The participants will be invited to react and exchange with the guides and other participants on this question.
