Guided tour / Comingtogether

Arc-en-ciel

Team: Label architecture; JZH & Partners

Saint-Josse-ten-Noode/Sint-Joost-ten-Node in Brussels is Belgium's most densely populated municipality. How do you create space where children can play and relax in an environment that is almost completely built up? At the Arc-en-Ciel ('Rainbow') school and kindergarten, Label's architects experimented with stacking functions and open space. New classrooms were added, and the play area was doubled, firstly by using the school's flat roof as a playground, with a view out over Brussels (from the street you can see the white grilles and hear children playing at break times), and secondly by adding a structure with a same-level indoor play centre to the existing courtyard. This structure is also a toy: children can climb on it, slide off it or run up and down the steps. In this way, a stimulating environment for learning and play was created in a limited space.

The visit on Saturday 16.10.2021 at 15:00 will be given by the architect.

The Covid Safe Ticket applies.
