Guided tour / Project nominated for the Brussels Architecture Prize
Accommodation and shop Rue des Grands Carmes
Lhoas & Lhoas Architectes, 2020
This project comprises two buildings of different typologies, linked at the centre of the block. A former office building on Rue des Grands Carmes and a traditional house on Rue de la Gouttière share a common entrance via the house, which has itself been completely renovated. This single entrance has made it possible to convert the upper floors of the building into four flats, while keeping the ground floor commercial space functional.
This entrance leads to a luminous outdoor space, stripped of its unnecessary volumes. The disorder of a densely-packed, hybrid housing block has been replaced by simple, well-crafted geometries: a concrete spiral staircase leading to the first floor, curved wall sections, a separate volume for the lift and a cylinder for the fire escape in expanded metal. Each flat has a generous terrace.
This conversion provides a welcome breathing space for one of the densest blocks in the historic heart of the capital.
The visit on Saturday 18.11.2023 at 13:00 will be given by one of the architects.
